What counts as a campfire

A campfire, called a Category 1 fire, is no larger than 0.5 m high by 0.5 m wide. Anything bigger falls under other open fire categories with more rules.

How to build one

  • Pick level ground away from tents, shrubs and trees
  • Clear the area down to bare dirt
  • Keep a hand tool such as a shovel or axe, or 8 litres of water, within reach
  • Stay with the fire at all times

When there is a prohibition

During a Category 1 campfire prohibition you may not light a campfire. Approved stoves are allowed with a flame no longer than 15 cm, unless restrictions say otherwise. Local bylaws can add rules. Check the BC Wildfire Service page for the day you travel, because prohibitions start and lift quickly.
